Cologne Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Locations and UK Travel

Cologne doesn’t have one Christmas market — it has seven, each with its own character, all within walking distance of each other. The flagship market sits directly beneath the twin spires of Cologne Cathedral, but the old town, harbour and parks all run their own. If you’re weighing European options, our UK Christmas markets 2026 hub covers what’s on at home.

Every date and opening time below was checked on 2 November 2026 — against each market’s own website where it publishes dates, otherwise against multiple independent guides that all agree with each other (flagged in the text). Hours can still change at short notice, so confirm on the official site before you travel.

The Christmas market at Cologne Cathedral

This is the one everyone pictures: up to 140 festively decorated stalls spread across Roncalliplatz in the shadow of the cathedral, which the city tourism site says draws around four million visitors a year. It runs 16 November to 23 December 2026, opening Sun–Wed 11:00–21:00, Thu–Fri 11:00–22:00 and Sat 10:00–22:00. It is closed on Totensonntag, Sunday 22 November 2026, a German day of remembrance.

The centrepiece is a 25-metre natural fir tree — one of the tallest natural Christmas trees in North Rhine-Westphalia — beside a light canopy of around 50,000 LEDs. The central stage hosts more than 100 free events across the season, and there’s a children’s programme with crafts, face painting and a historic carousel. The market holds an ISO 20121 sustainability certification, the first for a German Christmas market. It is a short walk from Köln Hauptbahnhof (U-Bahn lines 5, 16 and 18 to Dom/Hauptbahnhof).

Alter Markt and Heumarkt: Heinzels Wintermärchen

The old town hosts the city’s largest market by area, themed around the Heinzelmännchen — the legendary helper elves of Cologne folklore. Alter Markt is expected to run 23 November to 23 December 2026; Heumarkt 23 November 2026 to 10 January 2027 (multiple independent guides agree; the organiser’s site doesn’t publish dates), closed on 24 and 25 December. Both open daily 11:00–22:00 (from 31 December, 11:00–21:00).

More than 100 stalls are organised into themed alleys across the two plazas, with most artisans in the Handwerkergasse at Alter Markt. The Heumarkt half is the one to know: an open-air ice rink with straights over 100 metres long around the horseman statue, Eisstockschiessen (ice stock sport) lanes, a Ferris wheel and a Christmas post office for children. The rink stays open into January, so this is your best bet for skating between Christmas and New Year — book online in advance.

Markt der Engel at Neumarkt

The “Market of Angels” is the elegant one: hundreds of star lights, white wooden houses and angel performers, right in the shopping district near Schildergasse. It runs 16 November to 23 December 2026, Sun–Thu 11:00–21:00 and Fri–Sat 11:00–22:00, closing at 21:00 on 23 December. Like the cathedral market, it is closed on Totensonntag, 22 November.

Nikolausdorf at Rudolfplatz

The “Nicholas Village” is a small, family-focused market of timber huts in front of the medieval Hahnentorburg gate, a ten-minute stroll from Neumarkt. It is expected to run 16 November to 23 December 2026 (multiple guides agree; the market’s own site doesn’t publish dates), Sun–Thu 11:00–21:00 and Fri–Sat 11:00–22:00, closed 22 November. Expect daily appearances from Nikolaus himself, a live stage from 18:00 with Cologne artists and choirs, and a fairytale atmosphere that suits younger children — a gentler alternative to the big-ticket family trips like Disneyland Paris at Christmas.

The Harbour Christmas market at Rheinauhafen

Beside the Chocolate Museum on the Rhine promenade, the Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt runs longest: 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, still open when the central markets have packed up. Around 70 wooden huts line the waterfront, and a 48-metre Ferris wheel gives panoramic views over the Rhine, the old town and the cathedral. There is evening live music on the harbour stage plus a children’s carousel and little train.

Stadtgarten

In the Belgian Quarter, the Stadtgarten market is the locals’ favourite: 60–90 makers in the park’s beer garden, with exhibitors changing every week. It is expected to run 13 November to 23 December 2026 (multiple guides agree; the organiser’s site doesn’t publish dates), Mon–Fri 16:00–21:30 and Sat–Sun 12:00–21:30 — a later start than the central markets, making it an evening stop. Design-led and relaxed, a good counterpoint to the cathedral crowds.

What to eat and drink

Glühwein is the non-negotiable first purchase — sold in collectible market mugs, usually with a small deposit you get back if you return the cup. Food-wise, expect reibekuchen (crispy potato pancakes with apple sauce), bratwurst, flame-grilled salmon, Handbrot, fresh waffles, roasted almonds and kölsche Spekulatius, the cathedral market’s own spiced biscuit. The old-town market’s food alleys are best for a proper meal. For festive food ideas at home, see our M&S Christmas food 2026 guide. The markets publish no official drink prices, so check the boards at each stall.

Getting there from the UK

By air: direct flights operate from London airports to Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN), about 15 km from the centre with a direct train link. Prices move constantly — check live prices before booking rather than relying on any figure quoted in a guide.

By rail: Eurostar from London St Pancras to Brussels, then a high-speed ICE or Thalys train to Köln Hauptbahnhof. The cathedral market is steps from the station exit, and the other central markets are all within a 20-minute walk. Longer than flying, but no airport transfers.

Where to stay: the old town (Altstadt) puts you among the central markets; the Belgian Quarter is trendier and close to Stadtgarten and Rudolfplatz.

Practical tips

  • Avoid Sunday 22 November 2026 for the central markets — cathedral, Neumarkt and Rudolfplatz are all closed for Totensonntag.
  • Weekday evenings are calmest. Saturdays are busiest everywhere; the cathedral market opens at 10:00 on Saturdays to absorb the crowds.
  • Bring cash and a card. Many stalls take cards, but smaller food huts can be cash-only.
  • Dress for the Rhine wind. The harbour market is exposed and feels colder than the sheltered squares.
  • After Christmas: only the harbour market (to 3 January 2027) and the Heumarkt half of Heinzels Wintermärchen (to 10 January 2027) stay open. A Rhine Christmas cruise is another way to see the city in lights; Hyde Park Winter Wonderland and Prague’s Christmas market are the alternatives if you’d rather stay closer to home.
