What to eat and drink

Vienna’s markets run on Glühwein (mulled wine), Punsch, roasted chestnuts (Maroni), Kartoffelpuffer, Bratwurst and Kaiserschmarrn — the shredded pancake dessert Austria is famous for. Budget a few euros per item; stall prices are set by vendors, so carry some cash alongside your card.

Getting there from the UK

Vienna is served by direct flights from London Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and several regional UK airports, with a flight time of around two hours. From Vienna International Airport, the City Airport Train (CAT) or the S-Bahn S7 reach the city centre in 16–25 minutes.

Once in Vienna, the U-Bahn, trams and buses connect all the markets — most are within a few stops of each other in the Innere Stadt. Many visitors combine Vienna with a Christmas market river cruise, as Danube sailings call at the city through December.

Where to stay

Book early: Vienna’s December hotel rates climb steeply. The Innere Stadt (1st district) puts you walking distance from Rathausplatz, Stephansplatz and Freyung; the areas around Westbahnhof and the MuseumsQuartier are good value alternatives on the U-Bahn. If your trip spans Christmas itself, see our Christmas 2026 holidays guide for timing your break.

Tips for UK visitors

  • Currency: Austria uses the euro — order currency before you fly or use a fee-free travel card.
  • Language: German; English is widely spoken at markets and hotels.
  • Christmas Eve: Most markets close early (around 4–6:30pm) on 24 December, and much of the city shuts down — plan a quiet evening.
  • New Year: The Belvedere market runs to 31 December, and Vienna’s famous New Year’s Eve Trail (Silvesterpfad) takes over the old town.
  • Ice skating: Vienna Ice World on Rathausplatz is one of Europe’s great festive experiences — skate hire is available on site.
