Krakow Christmas market dates 2026
The season dates are confirmed on the City of Krakow’s official Magiczny Kraków calendar, checked 4 November 2026:
- 27 November 2026 – 6 January 2027 — the main market on Rynek Główny, run by the Krakowska Kongregacja Kupiecka with organiser ARTIM Sp. z o.o.
- One caveat: the organiser’s preliminary announcements have also mentioned 3 January 2027 as a possible closing day, so if you are booking a January trip, re-check the closing date on the organiser’s page before you fly.
The stalls stand on the square around the Town Hall Tower, between the Renaissance Sukiennice (Cloth Hall) and St Mary’s Basilica with its twin towers. Daily trading hours for 2026 had not been published on the official pages at the time of writing; in previous editions stalls typically traded from around 10am to 8pm, with food and drink stalls staying open later into the evening. Entry is free — it is an open public square, so you pay only for food, drink and shopping.
Check before you travel — dates and times can change, and trading is reduced over Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, when Polish families celebrate at home.
The szopki nativity scene competition
What sets Krakow apart from every other European Christmas market is the szopki — the city’s glittering nativity scenes, built as miniature, foil-covered versions of Krakow’s own churches and towers. The tradition was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2018.
The 84th Krakow Nativity Scene Competition takes place on Thursday 3 December 2026 — the first Thursday of December, as tradition dictates — on the Main Square, per the Museum of Krakow’s official announcement (szopki.muzeumkrakowa.pl). Makers carry their szopki to the Adam Mickiewicz monument between 10:00 and 12:00 and parade them around the Rynek at midday. It is free to watch and is the single most distinctive moment of Krakow’s festive season. The best entries are then displayed at the Museum of Krakow’s Krzysztofory Palace, with the post-competition exhibition running from 9 December 2026 to 28 February 2027.

What to eat and drink
The market is a feast of Polish street food. Look for pierogi (filled dumplings, fried or boiled), grilled oscypek — smoked sheep’s cheese from the Tatra mountains, usually served hot with cranberry — kiełbasa (grilled sausage), and bigos, the traditional hunter’s stew. To drink: grzane wino (mulled wine) and grzaniec, the Polish take on mulled beer. Market prices are set by the individual stallholders, so expect to pay more than in Krakow’s restaurants — carry some cash alongside your card.
Getting there from the UK
Krakow’s John Paul II International Airport (KRK) is about 11 km west of the city centre and is well connected to the UK. Ryanair’s own Krakow page lists direct flights from London Luton, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, Leeds and Belfast (plus Gatwick and Stansted), with one-way fares advertised from £16.99 — though actual prices vary by date, so check the airline’s own site for your dates. easyJet flies direct from London, Bristol and Edinburgh, and there are services from Heathrow via LOT and KLM.
The flight takes around 2 hours 25 minutes from London. From the airport, the train reaches Kraków Główny (the main station), and the Main Square is a short walk or tram ride from there.
Many visitors combine Krakow with other December destinations — our Christmas market cruises 2026 guide rounds up festive river sailings calling at Central European cities.
Where to stay
Stay in the Old Town (Stare Miasto) to be within walking distance of the Rynek Główny — the market is at its best after dark, so proximity matters. Kazimierz, the historic Jewish quarter, is a 10–15 minute walk away and offers characterful hotels at lower prices. Book early: late-December hotel rates in Krakow climb, and weekends sell out.

Day trips from Krakow
Two of Poland’s most significant sights are easy day trips from the city:
- Wieliczka Salt Mine — about 15 km southeast of Krakow, a UNESCO-listed underground world of chapels, sculptures and chambers carved entirely from salt.
- Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum — about 70 km west of the city, the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camp. A solemn visit; book tickets on the museum’s official site well in advance and allow at least half a day.
Tips for UK visitors
- Currency: Poland uses the złoty (PLN), not the euro. Order currency before you fly or use a fee-free travel card; some market stalls are cash-only.
- Language: Polish; English is widely spoken in the Old Town, hotels and restaurants.
- Christmas Eve (24 December): Wigilia — Poland’s main Christmas celebration — means reduced trading on the square. Plan for a quiet evening.
- Weather: Expect cold. Daytime temperatures in December usually sit around freezing, and snow is common — dress in layers and wear proper boots for the cobbled square.
- Crowds: Weekday evenings are far calmer than weekends. The first Thursday of December brings the szopki crowds; arrive early for the parade at midday.
- The hejnał: listen for the hourly trumpet call from St Mary’s taller tower — it stops mid-melody, as it has for centuries.
